01 · Quick answer
- Cut first — an Excellent or Ideal cut grade gives you the sparkle. A poorly cut D-colour diamond looks dull.
- Insist on IGI or GIA for any stone above 0.20 carat — "in-house certified" is not independent verification.

02 · The 4 Cs — carat, cut, colour, clarity
Every diamond is graded on four universally accepted criteria. Understanding each one prevents you from overpaying for attributes that don't affect how the piece looks or wears.
Cut — the one that matters most
Cut refers to how well the diamond's facets interact with light — it determines brilliance, fire, and scintillation. Grades run: Excellent (also called Ideal at some labs), Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor. An Excellent cut stone returns maximum light to the eye. A Poor cut stone leaks light through the base, appearing dark and flat regardless of colour or clarity.
Cut is the only C fully controlled by the craftsman — the other three are fixed natural characteristics of the rough crystal. This is why it should be prioritised: two diamonds at the same price can look completely different if one is Excellent cut and the other is Good.
Minimum recommended: Very Good. Ideal: Excellent.
Carat — weight, not size
Carat is a unit of weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams. It does not directly specify size, because different cuts distribute weight differently. A 1-carat round brilliant is approximately 6.5mm in diameter at the table. A 0.50-carat round brilliant is approximately 5.2mm. These are useful mental anchors for sizing discussions.
Size perception is also heavily influenced by setting style: a halo setting (small accent diamonds surrounding the centre stone) makes a 0.50-carat centre stone appear significantly larger than a solitaire of the same weight. If visual size matters more than carat weight, discuss halo designs with your jeweller before committing to a stone weight.
Colour — the D to Z scale
GIA and IGI grade diamond colour from D (completely colourless) to Z (visibly yellow or brown tint). The grading is done face-down under controlled lighting. In a finished ring face-up in natural light, the human eye cannot reliably distinguish D from G in most settings.
- D–F: Colourless. Rarest, most expensive. The premium over G is significant and largely invisible in finished jewellery.
- G–J: Near-colourless. The practical range for most buyers — face-up in white gold or platinum they appear colourless. G and H are the sweet spot.
- K–M: Faint yellow. Visible in colourless settings but often used intentionally in yellow gold where the warm tone blends.
Recommended for white gold / platinum: G–H. For yellow gold: H–J is fine.
Clarity — inclusions and blemishes
Clarity grades internal features (inclusions) and surface features (blemishes). The IGI/GIA scale runs from FL (Flawless) through IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, I1, I2, I3. Most buyers cannot see inclusions with the naked eye at SI1 and many VS2 grades — these are described as "eye-clean".
The jump from SI1 to VS2 in price is modest; the jump from VS2 to VVS2 is substantial — for no perceptible visual difference in a mounted, face-up stone. Paying for FL or IF is typically premium-for-the-certificate, not premium-for-the-look.
Recommended: VS2 or SI1. Ask your jeweller to confirm eye-clean on the specific stone before purchase.
Practical priority order (fixed budget)
Cut (Excellent) → Colour (G–H) → Clarity (VS2 or SI1) → Carat (buy as large as remains within budget after the first three). This order maximises visual impact per rupee spent.
03 · Why IGI or GIA certification matters
A diamond certificate is not a sales document — it is an independent technical report. IGI (International Gemological Institute) and GIA (Gemological Institute of America) are both third-party laboratories with no financial interest in the sale. Their graders assess the stone without knowing who owns it or what it is worth to the seller.
IGI is the most common certification in India. It is accepted by all Indian retailers and banks for gold-loan collateral purposes. IGI reports are fully verifiable at igiworldwide.com by report number.
GIA carries slightly broader international resale recognition — useful if you plan to sell or upgrade in an international market. GIA reports are verifiable at gia.edu/report-check. We provide IGI as standard and GIA on request.
Laser inscription
For any diamond 0.30 carat and above, the IGI or GIA report number is laser-inscribed on the girdle (the narrow edge around the diameter of the stone). You can verify this matches the certificate with a jeweller's loupe. A stone without a matching inscription on a post-2015 certificate is a red flag.
"In-house certified" is not independent
A certificate issued by the jeweller's own gemologist, or by a lab with undisclosed commercial relationships, carries no independent assurance. The grades assigned are unverifiable. Insist on IGI or GIA — anything else for a purchase above ₹20,000 is insufficient.
04 · Setting types and what they say
The setting is the metalwork that holds the diamond. It affects how much of the stone is visible, how much light enters it, and how protected it is during daily wear. Choosing the wrong setting for a lifestyle is the most common diamond jewellery regret.
Prong (claw) setting
Maximum sparkle · Stone most exposed
Four or six thin metal prongs grip the stone at the girdle. Maximum light enters the diamond from all angles, maximising brilliance. The stone is more exposed — prongs can catch on fabric and, over years, may loosen. Best for engagement rings or pieces worn on special occasions. Inspect prong tightness annually.
Bezel setting
Most protective · Modern look · Daily wear
A rim of metal surrounds the entire circumference of the stone. The diamond is the most protected it can be in a setting — no exposed prongs to snag or loosen. Slightly reduces sparkle because the metal rim limits the angle of light entry. Recommended for rings worn every day, for people with active hands or workplaces where snagging is common.
Pavé setting
High coverage · Shimmer · Bridal sets
Many small diamonds set close together across the surface of the band or halo, held by tiny beads of metal. Creates a surface that appears to be entirely diamond. Adds shimmer and visual scale to a piece. Requires more careful cleaning — small diamonds collect residue in the gaps. Used at Kishna for bridal sets, halos around centre stones, and accent bands.
Channel setting
Secure · Clean line · Eternity bands
Stones are set between two parallel rails of metal, held without exposed prongs. Very secure — no stone can fall out unless the rail is physically damaged. The stones sit flush with or just below the metal edge. The standard setting for eternity bands and anniversary rings at Kishna.
Tension setting
Dramatic · Requires hard metal
The stone appears to float between two ends of the band, held by compression in the metal rather than prongs or a bezel. Visually striking — maximises light exposure from all directions including the base. Requires a very hard metal (typically platinum or 18K white gold) and precise engineering. Not suitable for soft metals or large stones above 1.5 carat.
05 · How to allocate your budget
A useful starting framework for a solitaire diamond ring: allocate approximately 70% of the total budget to the diamond, 20% to the gold setting (metal cost + making charges), and 10% to incidentals (IGI/GIA certificate fee, engraving, ring box, GST uplift). For a bridal diamond set, distributing the budget across multiple stones of moderate size typically gives better visual impact than concentrating it into a single large stone.

The practical implication: if your budget is ₹1.5 lakh and you want maximum visual impact from a solitaire ring, a lab-grown 1-carat Excellent-cut G VS2 in 18K gold delivers that at ₹1–1.2 lakh — leaving budget for a quality setting. A mined 0.50-carat equivalent at the same quality grade would cost ₹80,000–1 lakh. Neither choice is wrong — the question is whether the mined provenance matters for your intent.
06 · Lab-grown vs mined diamonds
Lab-grown diamonds are not simulants — they are chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined diamonds. The same IGI and GIA labs grade them using the same 4-C criteria. A lab-grown diamond has the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), the same refractive index, and the same thermal conductivity as a mined stone. Standard diamond testers cannot distinguish them.
Where lab-grown is the rational choice
- Fashion pieces worn seasonally
- Diamond stud earrings for everyday wear
- Maximising carat weight within a fixed budget
- Buyers prioritising ethical / environmental narrative
- Pavé and halo accent stones where individual stone cost adds up
Where mined may be preferred
- Heirloom bridal pieces intended to pass across generations
- Investment intent (mined maintains stronger secondary market currently)
- Cultural or traditional contexts where natural provenance is meaningful
- Rare fancy-colour diamonds (vivid yellow, pink, blue — lab-grown equivalents exist but the mined rarity narrative carries weight)
One clarification worth making explicitly: a lab-grown diamond is not moissanite. Moissanite is a different material (silicon carbide) that visually resembles diamond but tests differently on advanced equipment and has different optical properties (higher dispersion, slightly different refractive index).
